1/35 Brückenleger auf Panzer II Ausf.D1 – Bronco Model CB35089

The Bronco Models 1/35 Brückenleger auf Panzer II Ausf.D1 (CB35089) recreates one of the most unusual and rarely modeled German engineering vehicles of WWII. Based on the fast Panzer II Ausf.D1 chassis—originally designed for the planned Schnelle Truppen (fast troops)—this variant was converted into a bridge‑laying vehicle to support rapid armored advances.

Historical Background

In the late 1930s, German armored doctrine emphasized speed and mobility. The Panzer II Ausf.D1 featured a new Christie‑style suspension and improved road speed, making it a candidate for specialized engineering roles. A small number were converted into Brückenleger (bridge‑layer) vehicles, equipped with a light assault bridge intended to help tanks and reconnaissance units cross small obstacles, trenches, and anti‑tank ditches.

Key historical notes:

• Only a very limited number of Brückenleger auf Pz.II D1 vehicles were produced, making them extremely rare.

• They were intended for early‑war operations, particularly in Poland and France, though documentation of their combat use is scarce.

• The concept was soon replaced by more capable bridge‑laying vehicles based on larger chassis such as the Panzer III and IV.

• Their short service life and limited production make them a fascinating subject for modelers interested in experimental or early‑war German engineering vehicles.

Kit Highlights

Bronco’s kit captures the unique engineering and mechanical complexity of this rare vehicle with exceptional detail:

• Highly detailed Panzer II Ausf.D1 hull with accurate Christie‑type suspension

• Fully rendered bridge‑laying mechanism with arms, supports, and structural detail

• Detailed assault bridge with realistic panel and rivet texture

• Optional deployment or stowed bridge configuration

• Detailed interior elements including driver’s compartment and hull fittings

• Photo‑etched parts for fine detail and scale accuracy

• Link‑and‑length tracks for realistic sag and easier assembly

• Decals for early‑war German engineering units

This kit is perfect for modelers who enjoy rare prototypes, early‑war German vehicles, and engineering subjects. Its distinctive silhouette and historical obscurity make it a standout addition to any WWII armor collection or diorama.
