The JS-1, also known as the IS-1, was a heavy tank developed by the Soviet Union during World War II. It was designed to counter the German Panther and Tiger I tanks and was primarily used as a breakthrough tank.
The JS-1 was armed with an 85mm D-5T series main gun and was crewed by four personnel. The IS-1 was produced in limited numbers, with only about 200 units being completed. It was eventually replaced by the IS-2 series and its 122mm A-19 series main guns. The IS-1's development was a response to the Soviet Union's need for more powerful tanks to combat the advancing German forces.
