The /9 variant — nicknamed Stummel ("stump") by German crews — mounted a short-barrelled 7.5cm KwK37 L/24 infantry gun in place of the standard armament, providing Panzergrenadier battalions with an organic direct-fire support weapon capable of engaging machine gun nests, field fortifications, and anti-tank gun positions.

The Sd.Kfz.251 was the most widely produced German half-track of the war, and its /9 sub-variant emerged to fill the gap left when the Panzer IV short-gun variant was phased out of production. The Ausf.C was the third production series, featuring a revised armored nose and other improvements over the Ausf.A and B.
