The Dragon Models 1/35 Sd.Kfz.138 Marder III Ausf.M — Initial Production (6464) is a highly detailed Smart Kit depicting the opening production batch of the definitive Marder III tank destroyer variant. The Ausf.M (Mittlere — "middle/improved") was a ground-up redesign of the earlier Marder III Ausf.H, relocating the engine to the rear of the hull and placing the fighting compartment amidships. This lowered the overall silhouette, improved crew ergonomics, and resulted in a much more effective fighting vehicle.
The Marder III family was born of necessity following the shock of encountering Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks in 1941. The Wehrmacht needed a mobile anti-tank solution urgently, and mounting captured Soviet 76.2mm guns (later replaced by the German 7.5cm PaK40/3) onto the Czechoslovak Panzer 38(t) chassis provided a rapid answer. Over 1,700 Marder III vehicles of all variants were produced between 1942 and 1944, serving on the Eastern Front, in North Africa, and in Italy. The Ausf.M initial production vehicles, built from mid-1943, are distinguishable by specific early features subsequently revised during the production run.
Key Features:
- 1/35 scale injection-molded Smart Kit
- "Ultra-Slim" injection technology for scale-thickness armor plates in the open fighting compartment
- Full fighting compartment interior detail including shell racks with optional ammunition
- Clear plastic periscope and vision port parts
- Photo-etched brass fine detail components
- Magic Track individual link tracks for the 38(t)-based running gear
- Multiple Wehrmacht marking options
Dragon's Ultra-Slim injection technology is a particular highlight of this kit — achieving scale wall thickness for the open-topped fighting compartment armor plates in injection plastic is a significant engineering achievement that dramatically improves the model's appearance when viewed from above.
Ideal For:
- WWII German tank destroyer and Marder III variant collectors
- Eastern Front 1943–44 and Italian campaign diorama builders
- Intermediate to advanced modelers who appreciate open-topped fighting compartment detail
The Dragon Marder III Ausf.M Initial Production kit delivers an exceptional level of detail for one of the most important German tank destroyers of the mid-war period.
