The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.H was the most produced variant of Germany's workhorse tank, with over 3,700 manufactured from April 1943 to July 1944. It was the predominant German tank in the battles of Kursk (July 1943) and Normandy (June–August 1944), where it formed the backbone of Panzer division strength. The Ausf.H incorporated a strengthened 80mm frontal glacis plate as a single piece, Zimmerit anti-magnetic-mine paste on all vertical surfaces, 5mm side skirt armor (Schürzen) on the hull sides, and 8mm turret skirts. The long 7.5cm KwK.40 L/48 gun gave it excellent anti-tank capability against most Allied tanks. When the Allies landed in Normandy on 6 June 1944, approximately half of German tanks in that theater were Panzer IVs of this type.
